If you’re in the process of building a home, chances are you’ve heard of Hebel. But what is it exactly, and why is it gaining such popularity among builders and architects?

Hebel is a lightweight, eco-friendly building material known for its speed of installation, design versatility, and cost-effectiveness. It allows for sleek, fully rendered finishes without the complexity or expense of traditional bricks and mortar—making it a top choice for many in the industry.

What is Hebel?

Hebel is a high-performance building material made from Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), available in both block and panel forms. In a Hebel home, the external walls—including the facade, sides, and rear—are constructed using solid, durable Hebel panels that are fixed directly to the home’s structural frame.

What kind of finish does a Hebel home have?

Hebel panels are 75mm thick and finished with an advanced acrylic coating system, providing a smooth, fully rendered appearance across your entire home. This modern finish allows you to choose from a wide range of colours and makes future updates easy. Whether you want to complement the surrounding environment, highlight architectural features, or simply express your personal style, Hebel gives you the design flexibility to do so.

Where can Hebel be used?

Hebel is ideal for external walls and is installed over a timber frame for a strong and resilient finish. Please note that Hebel is not compatible with brickwork—homes must be constructed using either Hebel or brick, not a combination of both.

How does Hebel compare to brick?

Each Hebel panel is reinforced with steel for extra strength and coated with an anti-corrosion layer to ensure long-term durability. Hebel delivers the solid feel and rendered look of masonry construction, offering a comparable alternative to traditional bricks and mortar.

What is Hebel made from?

Hebel is composed of natural, sustainable materials—sand, cement, lime, gypsum, and water—combined with a special expansion agent. This mixture forms a lightweight slurry that is poured into moulds and cured to create strong, lightweight blocks and panels.

What Makes Hebel Unique?

1. Strong, Solid, and Built to Last
Hebel panels are a premium, high-performance building material made from Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), reinforced with steel and coated with an anti-corrosion layer. This combination delivers exceptional strength, durability, and long-term resilience—ideal for Australian homes.

Thanks to the integrated steel reinforcement, lightweight fixtures like clotheslines, hose reels, and outdoor lighting can be easily attached to Hebel walls.

2. Versatile Design Options
Hebel offers outstanding design flexibility, allowing you to create a facade that truly reflects your personal style. Its sleek, rendered finish works beautifully with a wide selection of Dulux colours, giving you the freedom to customise your home’s exterior.

To enhance visual appeal, we also incorporate complementary materials such as low-maintenance PermaTimber, weatherboard-look cladding, and the option to feature stylish tiles on your porch piers—adding character and architectural interest to your facade.

3. Exceptional Thermal Performance
Hebel panels provide excellent insulation, helping to regulate your home’s internal temperature. They keep interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter, which can lead to significant savings on heating and cooling bills.

4. Faster Build Times
Lightweight and easy to work with, Hebel enables quicker construction without compromising on quality. One Hebel panel replaces around 75 standard bricks, meaning that with a skilled installer, your home’s external walls can be completed in as little as three days.

5. Superior Acoustic Insulation
Enjoy a quieter, more peaceful living environment. Hebel’s dense, solid structure helps block out external noise—like traffic or noisy neighbours—making it easier to relax and unwind in your own home.

6. Fire-Resistant and Bushfire-Safe
Hebel products are non-combustible and highly fire-resistant, making them an excellent choice for homes in bushfire-prone areas. Tested by the CSIRO, Hebel meets or exceeds requirements for all six Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) categories, offering you added peace of mind.

7. Environmentally Conscious
Hebel is a sustainable building material that’s proudly manufactured in Australia using raw materials that are abundant and readily available. The production process is efficient, with waste and even steam recycled—making it a smart, eco-friendly choice for your home.

8. Backed by Proven Quality
CSR Hebel is Australia’s only manufacturer of AAC, with over 30 years of local expertise in developing, testing, and producing Hebel systems. When you choose Hebel, you’re choosing a trusted, high-quality product backed by decades of experience.
